AMERICAN CUP HISTORY

Back in 1851, Queen Victoria commissioned a cup called the “one hundred guinea cup”. She invited all the major nations in the world to come to England and race against her fleet of yachts.

They sailed their yacht, aptly called the “America” across the Atlantic to England setting a record in the process. The original race was hosted around the Isle of White, and the first boat to cross the finishing line would win the first cup.

The Americans started the race off slowly as they had left their anchor down when they started the race. They were laying mid fleet when they decided to take a short cut which put them in the winning position.

The British protested against the American’s but, unfortunately for the British, the American lawyers were better than the British so subsequently the Americans won the one hundred guinea cup.

While sailing back to the USA, the Americans re-named the winning cup, calling it the “Americas cup”. They named the cup after the boat but not their country. The cup went to the New York yacht club and stayed there for 132 years, making it the longest winning streak in sporting history which has made the America’s cup the most prestigious sporting event in the world.

In 1983, the Australians won the cup and took it back to Australia and the next regatta was based in Perth. Since then, it has then continued to change countries ever since and the race is alive today as it was 150 years ago.
